How a first-time candidate builds a war chest from nothing

Every first-time candidate hits the same wall: you need money to be taken seriously, and you need to be taken seriously to raise money. The way through isn't a rolodex you don't have — it's a system anyone can run.

Start with your list. Every contact in your phone, every email you've ever sent, every person who's said "let me know how I can help." That's your first finance committee. Ask them directly, personally, and for a specific number. Then ask each of them to introduce you to three more people.

The candidates who win the money race aren't the ones with the richest friends. They're the ones who ask the most, track everything, and never let a warm lead go cold. Discipline beats a rolodex every time.
